MARQUEE PROJECTS is pleased to announce Syrilla, an exhibition by multidisciplinary artist Gabrielle Ledet.

A reception for the artist will be open to the public on Saturday, October 5, from 5 to 7 pm. The exhibition will run from Friday, October 4 through Sunday, October 27, 2019.

This is Gabrielle Ledet’s first-ever solo exhibit. Born in New Orleans, Ledet works in a variety of mediums including film, animation, painting, drawing, sculpture, and clothing to explore blackness and womanhood. In this debut exhibition, the artist reflects on her childhood and pays homage to her great-grandmother (Syrilla), her grandmother, and all the women who helped raise her.

In 2017, Ledet’s film Fishbowl was commissioned by audio-visual curator/producers Video Jam as part of Boom for Real at the Barbican Centre in London – the first large-scale exhibition in the UK of the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat. The same film was selected to air on HBO’s first season of Random Acts of Flyness, in which Ledet also made a guest appearance. And the same year, she was featured in the “What’s Underneath” series on StyleLikeU, a global movement and radically honest storytelling multimedia platform focusing on empowering a self-acceptance revolution. In 2018, Ledet’s unique painted clothing was chosen by curator Richard Wainwright for his retail vintage trade fair A Current Affair.  In November 2019, Ledet’s film 2065 will be included in the Borscht Film Festival in Miami, FL.

Primarily self-taught, Ledet attended the Art Institute of Houston for a semester but chose not to continue.
