As MARQUEE PROJECTS continues into its fifth season, we are thrilled to present No Body Like This Body, a group exhibition featuring the work of Heather Benjamin, Deborah Buck, Kevin Ford, Bel Fullana, Hugo Guinness, Clarity Haynes, Adam Lowenbein, Wyatt Mills, Daniel Morowitz, Valiente Pastel, Hunter Potter, Gary Schneider, and Vahid Sharifian.
A reception for the artists will be held on Saturday, May 22 from 3 pm to 6 pm.
From the moment we open our eyes as infants we are hardwired to look at each other, and we live our lives searching faces and bodies for signals of identity, love, animosity, tribe, gender, and sexual attraction. And, for most of western history, learning the human form has been at the core of an artist’s training, an attempt to fathom the complex and elusive depths of our dominant visual fixation.
The primacy of the solely white male gaze has of course been shifting in the world of art, and new perspectives continuously develop – much as our own bodies (and identities) continuously morph from infancy to maturity to old age. Of the body, Walt Whitman wrote that “not an inch nor a particle of an inch is vile, and none shall be less familiar than the rest,” and in that spirit MARQUEE PROJECTS has assembled a multifaceted, wide-ranging, and feisty group of artists who scrutinize the human form, unblinkingly depict its functions, and portray/question the many variables of identity and what we perceive as beautiful.
With so many artists today returning to this investigation of the figure/body (admittedly an expansive subject) MARQUEE PROJECTS is committed to returning to this theme in the near future with multiple sequels. This exhibit is our first iteration.
